TVR is Romania’s public television service. It has six channels, which are served by a studio in Bucharest as well as five regional studios (TVR Cluj, TVR Iasi, TVR Timisoara, TVR Craiova, TVR Târgu-Mureş). TVR is funded through a combination of government subsidies, a television licence fee and advertising.

Romanian Television broadcasts TV programmes for Romanians living at home, for Romanians living abroad, for each region of the country.

TVR provides a public service on the basis of the Law 41/ 1994.

TVR 3: A première in Romanian audiovisual – the first national channel dedicated to local communities

Romanian Television launched a new TV channel called TVR3 on  October 10th 2008.
TVR 3 is the sixth channel offered by Romanian Television to its viewers after TVR1, TVR2, TVR Cultural,  TVR International and TVR HD. In this way, TVR fulfills once more its mission of public television meant to respond to the public’s needs and expectations.
TVR 3 comes up with a dynamic and varied programme grid, which will reflect the regional events. TVR 3’s grid is made up of programmes produced by the regional studios from Iaşi, Craiova, Cluj, Timişoara, Târgu-Mureş and Bucharest. The southern part of the country will be covered by productions made by the central studios.
During the week, TVR 3 offers both informative programmes and utilitarian or entertainment programmes from Romania.
TVR 3 is a channel of public interest and a “must carry” for the cable operators. Like all the other TVR channels, TVR 3 is broadcast by Eutelsat satellite W2/16 degrees E.

The station started broadcasting in 1991 by producing almost all types of programmes from news, current affairs to entertainment. The station broadcasts on the national network, channel 1, 210 minutes from Monday to Sunday and 360 minutes on the Channel 2.
The station covers 8 districts in the East and North-East of Romania. It has already co-operated with some regional stations in Europe and is participating to the integration activities of the Circom Regional.

The station started broadcasting on 3rd of January 1990. It broadcasts on the national network, Channel 1, 250 minutes/week and on Channel 2, 270 minutes/week. Among the 520 minutes of broadcasting/week 15% is a programme dedicated to the Hungarian minority to the Hungarian language and 6% to the German minority in the German language for the inhabitants living in the 10 districts covering the North-West and the Western side of Transylvania.

The station started broadcasting on the 17th October 1994 on the 1st and 2nd national channels. Now it is broadcasting about 7 hours weekly on the public TV channels. It's producing news, current affairs, cultural and entertainment programs covering 4 districts situated in the South-West of Romania. Every week a one-hour program is co-produced by the Hungarian, German and Serbian communities living in this multiethnical region. TVR Timisoara has been a member of Circom Regional since 1995.

The station started broadcasting on 1st of December 1998. TVR Craiova is servicing the area of Southern part of the country, along the Danube river.

Romanian Television got the audiovisual license via satellite for the regional studio in Targu  Mureş.
On 6 of  May , 2008 TVR Tg Mureş starts to broadcast . The new regional station joins the other four regional studious: TVR Cluj, TVR Craiova, TVR Iasi and TVR Timisoara.
Setting up the new regional channel is part of the TVR strategy concerning the development of the regional studious in order to reflect and broadcast the regional issues.
