The EU Commission announced this week a strategy to create a Digital Single Market. On its website the Commission writes:
“The internet and digital technologies are transforming our world. But existing barriers online mean citizens miss out on goods and services, internet companies and start-ups have their horizons limited, and businesses and governments cannot fully benefit from digital tools. It's time to make the EU's single market fit for the digital age – tearing down regulatory walls and moving from 28 national markets to a single one. This could contribute €415 billion per year to our economy and create 3.8 million jobs.”
To a great extent this will have an impact on public regional media working with broadcasting and online publishing. Johan Lindén, Secretary General of CIRCOM Regional, welcomes the strategy:
“The media sector has been waiting for a comprehensive strategy for many years now. It is clear that there are many positive openings in the proposed strategy. But it is also clear that there is little or no analysis of the effect on regional media – positive or negative. Within the CIRCOM family we know have to do the analysis and be very active towards national governments as well as EU institutions with clear messages."
