storytelling2025

Hosted by 3Cat in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Sunday 18th May (Arrival) to Saturday 24th May (Departure)

Workshop from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st May 2025
Followed by two days attendance at the 41st CIRCOM Regional Annual Conference hosted by 3Cat on the 22nd and 23rd May.

We are rocking the boat, and the boat rocks us. Artificial Intelligence is drafting scripts on its own for print and has been transcribing our sound for many years already. This updated training session is put together to give YOU as a content creator (or journalist, as we used to call us) a broader knowledge and confidence in using different tools to be creative in your daily life.

We will mainly focus on content created on your phone – all the way from idea to an edited product in 4K, if needed. No reason to bring with your laptops or stationary PCs. Maybe an iPad or a tablet if you have. We will dive into the world of TikToks, Reels and Stories on IG and Facebook – with the sole focus on creation, not publishing or maintaining a social media market – others can do that better. We create. And our professional stories for broadcast can easily be transformed to social media with the same material – or even better: surplus material shot on site of interest.

There will be plenty of exercises during this intense workshop, and delegates will not have a regular working day. We expect production to be going on in the evening as well. There will be overnight tasks to complete. But most of all it will be fun, challenging and inspiring.

  • Learn about new formats that are being used in the media.
  • Learn about the impact of AI on journalism and on film/stills/text.
  • Learn to use tools on a smartphone to shoot and edit social video.
  • Master the craft of impeccable footage with brilliant sound from your phone.
  • Become aware of importance of storytelling, and creative strategies for developing your own voice.
  • Debrief and feedback on what was learned.

By the end of the workshop, it is expected that delegates will have produced stories in different formats and most of them will be screened at the CIRCOM Conference

Bring you iPhone or Android device – the only spec is that is has to be a fairly new one. And you need to know your Play/Appstore-password and have at least 8 Gb of free space, a charger, a power bank and wired headset.
If you have more gear for mobile content creation – bring it on!

Delegates are required to send by 16thApril links (preferably a good quality file through WeTransfer or direct link to your station's web outlet if there are no geo-blocking measures in place) to the following:
- A TV report or social video they or a colleague authored that they are proud about
- A TV report or social video they or a colleague authored that they think was NOT that good (or frankly bad)

The training will be conducted in English, and it is important that applicants have a good working knowledge of the language.

Because the workshop is of an intense nature and requires a great deal of commitment from trainers and participants alike, priority will be given to those people, who already have some field practice but want to raise the bar. If you have not made any visual stories on your own, but still are hungry enough – convince us in a two-paragraph text.
There are 15 places available.

The workshop is led by Darko Flajpan (HRT) and John Inge Johansen (NRK).

Darko Flajpan: works as a fulltime television skills trainer at HRT in Zagreb, Croatia. Darko has provided his services for CIRCOM since 2003. He established the training centre for HRT and is a senior member of the CIRCOM training team.

John Inge Johansen: a multiskilled journalist from above the Arctic Circle. He is mainly out in the field, delivering radio, TV and online stories to his newsroom, both live and in edited formats. He is one of the early adopters and pioneers of MoJo-training and development. He has been connected to CIRCOM training since 2012.
