Training activities in 2008

ronanRTE Video journalist Rónán MacConIomaire has launched his VJ career.  His first news stories as a VJ included one on the invisible substance, not easy to film or portray on screen.

Ronan was a member of the recent VJ course in Budapest and he was quick to acknowledge how Circom has helped his work:

“I finally managed to start VJing this week, and have done my first two packages in Ireland.
Different challanges to doing the packages in Budapest, I notice... weather, long car journeys, time constraints, short days!  Still, got them done and so I guess I am now offically a VJ.  Doing a story on an invisible substance (radon gas) almost melted my brain however! Am really liking the new role, the two packages looked decent.  Thanks again for all the help in Hungary.”

Ronan seen here during his filming exercise in Budapest is becoming a bit of an expert in filming rock and inanimate subjects.  We wish him all the best in his future career.  Rock on Ronan.

NM2008_1The 9th management seminar organized by CIRCOM Regional took place from November 17-21, 2008 in Strasbourg in the ETMA (European Television & Media Management Academy) premises.

Nine editors in chief and head of newsrooms attended this seminar. They came from Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, and, for the first time, Malta.

Critical viewing was the core subject for the first two days: analysis of news reports, quality of the pictures and hierarchy of the information, but also the occasion for an extended exchange over the different news programmes from the various countries and over the functioning of the regional newsrooms.

The workshop was run by Didier Désormeaux, head of training for the journalists within the University of France Télévisions.

This year, Global Media was also the core of the exchanges with a cross presentation of SVT’s internet sites (Sweden) and France 3 as well as a reflection on the editorial policy led by these two public televisions to integrate the “new media”. This workshop was led by Christina Agren (head of SVT regional news) and Brigitte Besse (in charge of global media at France 3 Alsace).

From the Middle of the Atlantic to the Heart of Europe

This was the 10th Video Journalism workshop organised by Circom and they came from far and wide. 12 people from 10 countries made it to Budapest – with our first representative from the Azores Islands in the  middle of the Atlantic.

Vasco Miguel de Sousa Pernes, from TVP Portugal, took 4 planes and over 18 hours to reach Budapest. He said it would have been easier to get to Boston, USA but he made it and said that it was an experience he will never forget and worth all the effort.

This year the course was extended to two weeks and the VJs produced some excellent stories ranging from Dental Tourism, Regeneration of Factories, the Budapest Homeless through to a different take on the Economic Crisis and the plight of Single mothers.

All the reports are available for free broadcast on the Circom website as international versions.

Twelve happy VJs returned to their work this week with news skills and determination to put into practice what they had learnt with Circom in Budapest.

Circom Training Reaches New Heights

The first Circom Sports Reporting Workshop took of in a big way.  Sports journalists attending the course were invited by RTV Slovenia to Planica where the World Ski Flying Championships were taking place.

They were able to witness for themselves the biggest ski jump in the world and see competitors trying to beat the current world record of 239 metres.  While they were there they were given access to the athletes and reports were made from Planica.

11 sports journalists from 7 countries attended the 5-day workshop, which was held at the RTV Slovenia Training Centre in Ljubljana.  The course led by Roy Saatchi, ex Head of BBC North Region, was a mix of theoretical and practical exercises.

Reports were not just about Planica but also about the Handball Premiership, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating and International Sports exiles.  One of the highlights of the workshop was the showing and analysis of each other’s sports reports. Judging by the quality of what was on show there’s no doubt that Sports Reporting in the regions of Europe is in good hands and that Circom Training aims to take it to an even higher level.
