Budapest, Hungary
September 20th – October 2nd 2010
Circom has been training video journalists since 2004 and this year the workshop still proved to be as popular as ever with more applications than places available.
Thirteen video journalists from nine countries gathered in Budapest to attend the twelfth Circom VJ Workshop. This year the course leader was Tony O’Shaughnessy, a former BBC News and Current Affairs Programme Editor and Video Journalism Trainer. Tony was particularly keen to focus on the quality of journalism that the participants would produce over the 10 day period, and Karol Cioma and Darko Flajpan trained the VJs on the use of camera and editing software.
The journalists were pushed hard to produce two stories during their time on the intensive workshop and stories produced ranged from Dental Tourism, the plight of young children waiting for a heart-transplant donor and the exodus of Hungarian doctor’s seeking work in Scandanavia.
With lots of hard work behind them thirteen people return to their stations as trained video journalists, these are some of the comments that were made at the end of the course:
“Overall I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I’m leaving Budapest having learnt some practical tips. Especially pleased about learning a few journalistic tips from Tony.”
“Good standard of education. Good teachers. I like it that you require professional work from us because when we return back home and apply our skills it will be in a professional context.”
“Just stay like you are, because the new generation realize the future of television, and it won’t be still and grey but dynamic, colourful and with good storytelling.”
The next Circom Video Journalism Workshop will be held in October 2011.
