PRIX CIRCOM REGIONAL PROGRAMME AWARD 2007 WINNERS ANNOUNCED


The winning programmes in Europe’s richest awards for regional television productions are announced (2nd April) after the judging session in Strasbourg, France.
This year eight awards in seven award categories are going to seven countries across Europe (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany and Croatia won one award each, while BBC from United Kingdom won two awards). There were 183 entries – a record number.
Eight awards, including two for documentaries, were decided by a team of 14 programme makers from 13 different countries meeting over three days. There were 183 entries from 24 different countries.
This year, there were new categories for video Journalism, Fiction, Video Editing and Magazine and the criteria for sport were wider.
The Grand Prix for Documentary, this year supported by RTVE from Spain, is won by TV2 Ostjylland, Denmark with a 41-minute programme on Thai prostitution in Denmark (TRAPPED IN PROSTITUTION/FANGET SOM LUDER). It was produced by Lars Hoj, Kay Brase, Ole Gronbaek and directed by Irene Thyrri.The station wins the specially-designed trophy and prize money of 5,000 euros. The director wins travel and accommodation to the 25th Circom Regional annual conference, hosted by Television Espanola (TVE) and the Euskal Irrati Telebista eitb in Bilbao, Spain, from 10th to 12th May 2007. The producer of the Grand Prix winning programme, Irene Thyrri, previously won the same top award in 2005.
All the awards will be presented at a gala night attended by the executives of most of the European public service broadcasters and politicians in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, on May 11.
The awards were announced by David Lowen, Chairman of the Prix Circom Regional Awards, at the regional centre of France 3 Alsace in Strasbourg.
The cash value of the awards is 26,000 euros – plus a trophy, trip to the Circom Regional Annual Conference for the winning producer or director or station representative and the prestige and publicity which goes with winning one of the most sought after prizes in European television.
The winner of the Special Award of France 3 for highest quality of journalism is NRK1, More and Romsdal, Aalesund, Norway for a very thorough insight on possible tsunami catastrophe in Norwegian fjords (DANGEROUS MOUNTAINS/FARLIGE FJELL). Directed by Gunhild Saetre and produced by Svein Winther and Oyvind Sandnes. The station wins a trophy and prize money of 3,000 euros. The director is also invited to the conference and award ceremony.
The winner of the Magazine Award sponsored by TVP Poland, is Re: Act (RE: AGERA) from SVT 2 Gävledala in Sweden. The director is Elisabeth Bergkvist and the producer is Frederik Agné. The award is worth 3,000 euros.
The winner of the Sports Programme Award is The Beautiful Game: Footballers and Beauty Queens (ET DIEU CRÉA LE FOOT (LE PELADAO DE MANAUS)) from France 3 Alsace.  The award is sponsored by ERT3 Thessaloniki in Greece and is worth 3,000 euros. The director is Albert Knechtel and the producer is Alex Bellos.
The Web Site category was won by BBC London for http://www.bbc.co.uk/london. Gary Holland will collect the thropy and the cheque for 3,000 euros. The category was created to encourage stations to support their programming through the web by offering an extra service to viewers. The category is sponsored by SVT Sweden.
The Video Editing award gives special consideration to the quality of post-production editing. The winner of the Avid Award is Do Communists Have Better Sex? (LIEBTE DER OSTEN ANDERS? SEX IM GETEILTEN DEUTSCHLAND) from MDR Leipzig, Germany. The programme was directed by Andre Meier. The award is worth 3,000 euros and last year special AVID award is established as a new category this year.
The winner of the new Fiction/Drama category is I Love You (VOLIM TE) from HRT Zagreb Croatia. Directed by Dalibor Matanić and produced by Vesna Mort.
The category is sponsored by TG4 Ireland.
The winner of the new Video Journalism category is Mark Norman for his On Tour in Iraq produced for BBC South East Today, Tunbridge Wells. The category is sponsored by the BBC.

2006 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winning programmes in Europe’s richest awards for television productions were announced after the judging session in Maribor, Slovenia.
The Polish public service broadcaster TVP3 has won four of the six awards for television programmes – in the categories for Documentary, News Report, Sport and Television Across Europe. The two other programme awards were won by the Swedish broadcaster SVT and France 3. SVT has won the other award – for Web.
Seven awards, including three for documentaries, were decided by a team of 14 programme makers from 14 different countries meeting over three days. There were 149 entries from 22 different countries.

Monika Gorska, TVP3 Poznan, Grand Prix winnerThe Grand Prix for Documentary is won by TVP3 Poznan with a 25-minute programme on how distressed mothers cope with the loss of children at or just after birth (MY BABY IS AN ANGEL/MOJE DZIECKO JEST ANIOLEM). The producer was Artur Polanski and the director Monika Gorska. The station wins the specially-designed trophy and prize money of 5000 euros. The director won travel and accommodation to the CIRCOM Regional conference, hosted by Danish regional broadcaster TVSyd, in Kolding, Denmark, 25-27 May.
All the awards were presented at a gala night attended by the executives of most of the European public service broadcasters and politicians in the historic castle of Kolding on 26 May.
The awards were announced by David Lowen, Chairman of the Prix CIRCOM Regional Awards.

Piotr Borys, Deputy Director, Programming Office TVP, said after the announcement: "TVP is delighted that such experienced international judges have recognised the quality of Polish television production in such a prestigious award. We are delighted for our channel, for our regional stations, for our staff, and of course for our viewers with whom we are very close - and who, we hope, enjoy our programmes as much as the judges."
The cash value of the awards is 24,000 euros – plus a trophy, trip to the CIRCOM Regional Annual Conference for the winning producer or director or station representative and the prestige and publicity which goes with winning one of the most sought after prizes in European television.
The Prix for News Report is won by TVP3 Krakow (LOST WALLETS/ZGUBIONE PORTFELE). The short news report, on what happened when some very honest children found and returned a wallet lost in the street, was made by reporter Wojciech Brzezinski. The producer was Pawel Mrozek. The station wins a trophy and prize money of 3,000 euros. The reporter is also invited to the conference and award ceremony.
The winner of the Television Across Award, sponsored by the European organisation the Committee of the Regions, is The Eastern Border Talks (ROZMOWKI WSCHODNIOGRANICZNE) from TVP3 Lublin. This is a 22-minute documentary on the lifestyle at the border between Poland and Ukraine. The director is Grzegorz Michalec. The award is worth 4,000 euros. This programme is part of a magazine series produced on both sides of the border by Polish and Ukrainian journalists in Wolyn.
The winner of the Sports Programme Award is The Masters (MASTERSI) from TVP3 Bialystok. This programme tells the story of three very old amateur swimmers and how their interest in sport keeps them active and together as friends. The award is sponsored by ERT3 Thessaloniki in Greece and is worth 3,000 euros. The director is Beata Hyzy-Czolpinska and the producer is Ryszard Urbaniak.

Leonard Wallentin, SVT, winner in web categoryThe newly-created category for Web Site was won by SVT Vaxjo. Leonard Wallentin is the editor of the site and the cheque for 3000 euros and the trophy will be collected on behalf of SVT by Christina Agren. The category was created to encourage stations to support their programming through the web by offering an extra service to viewers. The category is sponsored by SVT, ironically the first winners!

There are two further documentary awards.
The first award is for the quality of journalistic investigation. The winner of the France 3 Award is Evil From Out The Shadows (MÖRDAREN FRÅN) from SVT Sydnytt in Malmo. This was a programme on how the killer of a young girl was tracked down more than 15 years later with the help of medical advances in DNA testing. It was produced by Per Lärka. The award is worth 3,000 euros.
The second award gives special consideration to the quality of post-production editing. The winner of the Avid Award is We Weren’t Just Becassines (NOUS N'ETIONS PAS DES BECASSINES) from France 3 Ouest in Rennes. This was a programme about how young girls used to be despatched to Paris to work as domestic servants – perhaps as many as 200,000.  The programme was directed by Thierry Compain and produced for France 3 Ouest by Saint Louis Productions. The award will be collected by Jean Michel Le Guennec, head of programmes for France 3 Ouest. The award is worth 3,000 euros and this is a new sponsorship.

David Lowen, chairman of the awards, said: “The entries were of high quality across a wide range. It is never easy to pick winners and the judges had a hard task. There is no doubt that the Polish stations were worthy winners and maybe more of us should be watching the way they make programmes – and interest their viewers”.
CIRCOM Regional is an organisation of almost 300 public service broadcasting stations in the regions of Europe and across 38 states. It was created to foster links between regional television stations.

CIRCOM Trainer wins Prix CIRCOM Award 

Gerard Le Couedic, France 3, winner of the award for his contribution and dedication to CIRCOM Training

 

Gerard Le Couedic from France 3 Formation, Paris was the winner of a special award at the Prix CIRCOM ceremony in Kolding, Denmark.  The award was for his contribution and dedication to CIRCOM Training. Gerard is the leading Picture Editing trainer at France 3 and is highly respected in his country for his skill and professionalism. Gerard has been involved with CIRCOM training since the first workshop held in Iasi in 1994.  Since that time he has contributed to the development of over 800 European journalists.  Karol Cioma., Project Manager for CIRCOM Training states "Gerard has been a founder member and constant support for CIRCOM Training since it begain.  He has now only worked tirelessly to help young people with their work, but has also impressed people with his editing style and his knowledge of the equipment used.  In short, he has been an inspiration to a lot of people and has been a dear friend and colleague to all the CIRCOM trainers and technicians."

PRIX CIRCOM REGIONAL PROGRAMME AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winning programmes in Europe's richest awards for television productions were announced on Saturday, April 24th after the judging session in Galway, Ireland.
The awards were announced by Pol O'Gallchoir, the director general of TG4 Ireland, the broadcaster hosting the judging, and David Lowen, the Chairman of the Prix Circom Regional Awards.
The cash value of the awards is 36,500 euros – plus a trophy and the prestige and publicity which goes with winning one of the most sought after prizes in European television. The awards will be presented at the Circom conference in Wroclaw on the evening of Thursday 27 May. The award ceremony will be televised by TVP3. On the Friday 28 May, the winning entries will be shown during "Meet the winners" session where participant will have a chance to talk to the producers of winning entries.
In all, eight awards were decided by the judges from regional television stations in 14 different European states, meeting over four days at the Ardilaun House Hotel, Galway. Other programmes were specially commended. There were 173 entries from 26 different countries.
The German television station in Frankfurt, Hessischer Rundfunk, has won two of the awards. Polish television stations have won three of the eight trophies. The others are won by stations from The Netherlands, France and Denmark. The Danish award is for a co-production led by TV2 Syd which has involved up to 30 European regional television stations.

The Grand Prix for Documentary is won by Michael's Story, a film about an alcoholic, made by TVP3 Wroclaw in Poland. The producer was Beata Januchata. TVP3 Wroclaw wins a trophy and prize money of 7,500 euros.

The Grand Prix for News is won by Maintower, the nightly news programme from Hessischer Rundfunk, the ARD regional station at Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The editor was Ute Janik. HR wins a trophy and prize money of 6,500 euros.

The winner of the Current Affairs Award, sponsored by the European Parliament, is Belfast: The Children and the Curse of History, made by Hessischer Rundfunk, Frankfurt. The award is worth 6,500 euros and the producer was Esther Schapira.

The winner of the Cross Border Programme Award, sponsored by the European organisation the Committee of the Regions, is The New Teenage Europe, a programme about how young people see Europe. This was a co-production led by TV Syd, Denmark, with executive producers Tim Johnson and Lene Kruger, and organised through Circom Regional. Twenty stations have been involved in supplying programme items and the winning edition included work from ERT3 Thessaloniki in Greece and from Slovakia TV. The award is worth 4,000 euros.

 The winner of the Sports Programme Award – new this year to celebrate the Athens Olympics – is won by Their Blue, from TVP Katowice, Poland . The award is sponsored by ERT3 Thessaloniki in Greece and is worth 3,000 euros. The winning production team is Ewelina Tomasik, Donata Chrusciel and Ewa Kozik. Ewelina Tomasik was a trainee at the Circom Regional workshop in Grado last year.

 The winner of the Most Original Programme Award is Look, There's Something In The Road, made by Omrop Fryslan in The Netherlands. The producer is Piter Tjeerdsma and the programme is a dream-like sequence in which an old hat retraces the life of its owner as he moves into old age and towards death. The award is sponsored by TVP3, the Polish regional challenge, and is worth 3,000 euros.

 The winner of the SVT Sweden prize for Documentaries is Earth Promised the Sky from France 3 Alsace, about the continuing search for bodies near Srbrenica. The producer is Sabina Subasic. The award is worth 3,000 euros.

 The winner of the France 3 Award for Documentaries is See You from TVP3 Szczecin, Poland. The programme is about the struggle of a boy pianist who is blind. The production team is Grzegorz Fedorowksi and Zbigniew Grefkowicz. The award is worth 3,000 euros.

There were eight categories at this year Prix Circom and nine programes were awarded.

The winner of the Grand Prix CR 2005 for the Documentary is "Inasenely Dangerous" for TV2 Ostjylland Danmark.

PRIX CIRCOM: REGIONAL PROGRAMME QUALITY RISING

 

The judges of the awards for the best European regional programmes (Prix Circom Regional 2003, Sinaia - Romania, April 10-12, 2003) were surprised by the improving quality of regional programming, especially documentaries, at a time of economic difficulty for many broadcasters. Bobrek Dance from TVP3 Katowice won the Grand Prix Documentary for an alert but often poignant view of life in a small and depressed Polish town. Facts Weekly from TVP3 Wroclaw won the Grand Prix News for a fresh way of doing a weekly review, involving viewers in trying to remember the main stories of the week.

 

The top awards – for news and documentary – both went to TVP3 Polish stations, who were singled out by judges for their creativity and journalistic strength. “The fast development of programmes in Poland has been wonderful to enjoy over the past few years,” said awards chairman David Lowen, Director General of EuroNews. “Poland has always had a flourishing film industry and this is now clearly translating to television. The Polish programmes across all regions were contenders for prizes.”
